It’s no doubt 2020 threw us all for a loop. Nothing like mastering the art of multitasking, re-defining and staying sane. For some, the work from home office has become a mainstay. For others, the flexibility of needing to work from home is still an option, but not quite an everyday gig.
Even those that are fully “back in the office” need the ability to work from home in the case of a (typically last minute!) needed quarantine, infection or childcare hurdle. No matter what your situation, it is helpful to define a space that will work for your work. We’ve gathered some stimulation to get the home office completed and give it the love it deserves.
Think about how you work. Are you a sit-down criss-cross applesauce type of worker? Are you a stand-up and move around worker? How much time do you/will you potentially spend in this space? Do you need more than one computer monitor? Do you need privacy? We could keep going, but you get the idea. Make a list of the things that are non-negotiable for your work day to be the most successful. That list should dictate the overall design of the space/room.
We love: Closets transformed into work spaces. Rooms designated for all things work. Giving your work area a “you” melody. Adding touches of inspiration so they wink at you throughout your work day. Making comfort a number one (just because you’ll be working doesn’t mean you shouldn’t feel comfy in your own space. A balance of sweat suit meets blazer.).
This can all come easy. A bit of thought and organization, it will all be worth it. Let’s be honest, the make-shift work space just ain’t cuttin’ it anymore. You need your kitchen table! This Covid thing has lasted way longer and the rules have changed, quite a bit. So, no matter what your new work routine is, get yourself set up for long-lasting success and inspiration.
Closet Workspace – Best part? It will be easy to leave it at the office. Close those doors when needed and your space quickly turns back into your home, not your work! Finding the right desk, etc. may be challenging, but we’re loving this sensible option. Whoever said you had to choose either form or function. Why not have both?
The Study/Library – This room doesn’t need to be boring or blah. It can inspire you. Maybe adding an inspiring wallpaper to the ceiling? Setting your desk up so you’re facing a window, but not impairing the look of the window from the outside (think floating your desk in the room so computer screens, etc. don’t show from the outside). A comfortable rug and fun chair (bean bag style?) to add an “I’m working but also not working” vibe. Cabinetry painted in a color that is soothing and motivating. The cabinets can help you keep the room tidy as well so even if you have an explosive work day you’re not feeling stressed about walking away and leaving everything for a bit.
Your personal touch - If you love patterns, color, minimalism, artwork, etc…include it when designing this space. Inspiration is always #1 in our book. We’ve said it before and we will continue to say this. Feeling inspired by your space when you walk in, really loving your space when you are in there (time and time again) and not regretting your choices for your space are all so important. Take the time to think this space through. As much as you want the instant gratification of it being complete, you want no regrets. Most importantly, you want your space to be functional and set up for success while loving it all at the same time!
Comfort - Whether it be your desk chair, a cushy window seat or an added rug this can be easy to do. These “comfort” items tend to be the finishing touches as well. Then you are done. And comfortable. Work hard, play hard!
