Green is having a moment. Naturally, we are gravitating toward the green trend and leaning into green tones in our clothing and accessories. But why not move green into our home décor as well? It can be a complex color, but done right, it can also be spot on. And a show-stopper.
Why is green having a moment? Maybe it’s because it brings nature’s natural vibe indoors. Or because it feels refreshing, organic and speaks to us directly. It provokes health and offers a relaxing yet invigorating tone that some colors don’t and can’t exude. We’ve been seeing green pop-up on kitchen islands, kitchen cabinets, accent walls, built-in cabinetry, upholstery and furniture. For inspiration (and a greater understanding of green), Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and Better Homes & Gardens have all named some sort of green tone as their 2022 Color of the Year! Here are some ways to use green in your own space…
Depending on the shade, green can transform any space. We’ve seen bold and bright to subtle and warm tones and no matter where in the world you live, it’s possible to incorporate green into home design. Whether using a little hint or a lot, we have a few ideas as to where green may make its best entrance and create its own staying power.
In the kitchen. Green in the kitchen – we think of the green Kitchen Aid blender our Mom still uses today. The avocado-green shade that worked its way into kitchens many years ago. That was the movement then. Oh man was it in style! Okay, let’s get our minds away from this 70s vibe and move it into a more polished, rich-green color palette. Here is what is inspiring us…
In a kitchen, green can be a catalyst for the base of the entire room. It’s such an inviting color, so it would naturally work in a kitchen setting since the kitchen is the heart of the home. Look for deeper green tones that add a rich dynamic. If using it as your cabinet color, be sure to pair the green with subtle hardware and countertops. Think blue-green hues, like an emerald green. It would also be so enriching to mark one piece, like the base of a kitchen island, in one or two shades (either) darker or lighter than the rest of the room’s cabinetry color. Also, one stand-alone cabinet such as a pantry can work in a green shade. Coordinating the same green tone as one countertop in the same room while leaving the rest of the room’s décor soft and in a neutral color palette is spot on as well. We love marble countertops with a brushed brass hardware finish to close out the room’s scheme.
In the living room it’s very easy to incorporate green. Again, it can be done in a bold way by painting the walls or ceiling or built-in cabinets. It can also be incorporated through pattern and texture by using green shades in the upholstery, throw pillows or window treatments. By following this scheme, it will be easy and fun to add in brighter shades of green! This is a nice way to give a room a more personal touch.
In the bathroom you can incorporate green streaks via the tile or even in the room’s accessories like the shower curtain or sink accessories!
In outdoor (or even semi-outdoor) living spaces it seems as if green is a natural choice for a color scheme. In an outdoor living area, green helps transition the space from the true outdoors to a nook of comfortable living for all those that will enjoy the area. Also, decorative items will most likely be easier to find because a lot of indoor/outdoor materials are available with some sort of green shade since the color accents the great outdoors so well.
We love green paired with other shades, too. Yellow, white (& black) and blue are the colors that pair best with green hues. Each pairing shows off a different scene. Green with yellow can feel a bit more country, and may provoke a more soothing and relaxing tone. The cool thing about any shade of green is that it can transport the brain into so many different aesthetics – such as tropical, classic, traditional, minimalistic, bohemian or even eclectic! So, green can make itself comfortable in any style of home and in any décor theme.
