8 Ways To Spruce Up Your Home

May 31, 2021

You don’t have to go big. You can just go home.

Uplifting a room doesn’t have to be a money (or time) suck. Decorating always seems like a big, expensive undertaking, but it doesn’t have to be. There are simple ways to add a little personality (your personality!) to your home and it really doesn’t have to be a daunting task. After a year of living in our personal spaces a lot more than anticipated, many of us are feeling the need to face-lift our favorite spots within our four walls.

When embarking on sprucing up a space our rule of thumb is to hone in on one thing that will make you happy. For some it’s color, for others it’s pattern. Some, it’s both! It can be as simple as adding an accessory. It can also be more of a hefty project like painting shelving or cabinets (still easy, especially if done by yours truly, Not Too Shabby Lady). Find your happy(iest) place and roll. Today we’re sharing our favorite go-to room boosters to inspire you and get your wheels turning (cue eye swoon)…

Throw pillows. Sounds simple because it is! You can go custom or shop your local home stores. One large, center pillow or a few side throws to show off your stacking abilities can add so much music to a room. A nice big pillow in the center of a couch adds a great hello and helps to tie the space together. Stacked side pillows can really bring on an inviting atmosphere. Adding pillows (of any size) allows you to add color, pattern or both!

Wallpaper an “accent” wall. We’re seeing this everywhere and loving it. You can really go crazy and wallpaper a ceiling! This is always a great compliment to freshly painted cabinetry – whether built-in bookshelves, shelving or kitchen cabinets. Wallpapering really helps tie a room together and makes it look decorated without fully needing to decorate. Make it something you love so you are inspired everyday while also inspiring your guests!

Pick a color for built-in cabinetry to give a room a specific mood. You can even give the color a bit more texture by choosing a hi-gloss finish. This is a little more high-maintenance, but when all is said and done you will be very happy!

Paint and/or wallpaper a book table. Adding one piece of furniture that also adds function for storage will check many boxes. All of you Type A’s out there can feel reassured that things are put in their own (well-decorated) location.

New hardware for cabinetry. If you’ve just re-painted your cabinets and want to freshen up your look, updating your hardware can step your room up to another level. If you are saving for newly painted cabinets as a near-future project, you can tie yourself over by changing out your knobs and pulls while saving for that paint job.

Add a pouf (or 2).  A solid or a pattern will do. We always love this idea because it helps add additional seating while creating a comfy, easy mood to a room.

Style a drink cart. As we get back into entertaining (remember that?!) purchase a bar cart and adorn it with fun mixology books, interesting cocktail mixings and/or decorative bar swag. This doesn’t have to be grand, but make it fun!

Colorful coffee table books are a bonus to any room. They decorate on their own, in a stack and also create conversation while entertaining! Also, if you have some down time to yourself, you’ll have great books to read and scan for even more inspiration.

A lot of these home pick-me-ups will get you ready to welcome your loved ones back into your personal space. First, always remember to start by inspiring yourself!
